Chatillon's Balance no 2 Dec. 10th 1867 with Brass Face
Item Details
Description
This Chatillon's balance no 2 Dec. 10th 1867 with Brass Face is still in workable condition. It weighs up to 48 pounds and spring is still strong. Face has been polished and it looks great for an item that is 155 years old. Held together with brass rivets. The back is cast iron. These scales came in two weights- 24 and 48 and were used to weigh fish. Most likely they were heavily used in the Fish Market along the coast and rivers in the North East. I am not sure why they called it a balance since it is a spring scale. Balances measure mass and spring scales measure weight. Here on earth the two at any given place are the same.
